Our 2022 Impact
February is Heart Month and
Black History Month
February is both Heart Month and Black History Month, both are important and well-timed topics for this month because People of Color are disproportionately impacted by heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women, but women of color have an even greater risk. Statistics show that People of Color have higher rates of high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes – common conditions that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. So, what can be done to decrease the risk?
Be active
Eat well
Check your blood pressure
Understand your blood sugar numbers
Know your cholesterol levels
Avoid smoking and vaping
Follow your doctor’s recommendations
Together, we can show our support by wearing red and bringing awareness to heart disease for February 3 – National Wear Red Day. Learn more by visiting Life’s Essential 8 | American Heart Association and for more resources, check out LiveWellLocal.org.
