Local Community Well-being &
Needs Highlights

From 2024 Snohomish County PIHC Health and Well-being Monitor.
See the full
2024 summary report.

This year Physical Health continues to be the most impactful indicator on our county’s overall well-being score. The drivers of physical health continue to be multi-dimensional, touching many areas of well-being. Findings showed that the state of our mental/emotional health most influenced physical health ratings. Other indicators of well-being that played a significant role were sense of financial security, opportunities to access medical care health information and the quality of our relationships Not surprisingly, results also showed that exercise greatly impacts our physical health.

For more information see the full 2024 summary report.

Visit our webpage to learn more about the annual PIHC Health and Wellbeing Monitor  which measures indicators that our community identified within six key dimensions that work together to enhance health and improve quality of life, and how smaller community groups like churches, neighborhoods, or regions within the county can conduct their own survey—a My Community Health and Well Being Monitor.

Seasonal Hazards

Hazardous winter weather including snow and ice can lead to an increase in slips and falls. One of the best ways to prevent falls in the winter is to wear shoes or boots that have good traction and grip.

  • Avoid wearing shoes that are smooth, flat, or have heels.
  • Look for footwear with rubber or neoprene soles or have cleats or spikes that can dig into the ice. You can also buy slip-resistant attachments that fit over your shoes, such as microspikes, crampons or ice grippers.
  • Make sure your footwear fits well and is comfortable. If you have to wear dress shoes for work or an event, carry them with you and change into them indoors.

    Walk like a penguin.

    • Another tip to prevent falls in the winter is to take a cue from penguins and walk carefully and slowly on slippery surfaces.
    • Avoid rushing or running, which can increase your chances of losing your balance.
    • Take small, slow, and deliberate steps, and keep your feet flat on the ground.
    • Bend your knees slightly and lean forward a bit to lower your center of gravity.
    • Use your arms to help you balance and avoid carrying heavy or bulky items that can throw you off balance.

Stay up to date with seasonal hazards by checking out the Seasonal Hazards Dashboard | Washington State Department of Health. You can also find additional local injury prevention resources, here

    February

    Black History Month

Black History Month begins in February, it serves as an important reminder that celebrating Black history should extend beyond February—it should be part of our daily lives. Heart month is also widely recognized during the month of February. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women, but women of color have an even greater risk. The Importance for blood pressure checks and bystander CPR can greatly increase chances of survival for Black Americans who have experienced cardiac arrest. Learn hands only CPR in 60 seconds.
